How to Measure Your Windows
Accurate measurements ensure your custom blinds fit perfectly. Follow the instructions below for both inside and outside mount options. If you'd prefer, we offer free in-home measurements - just book a consultation and we'll handle everything.
Inside Mount
Inside mount blinds sit inside the window frame for a clean, built-in look. This is the most popular option for most window types.
- Measure the width - Measure the width of the inside of the window frame at three points: top, middle, and bottom. Record the narrowest measurement.
- Measure the height - Measure the height of the inside of the window frame at three points: left, centre, and right. Record the longest measurement.
- Check the depth - Make sure the window frame is deep enough for an inside mount. Most blinds require at least 2 inches of depth.
- Check for square - Measure the diagonals of the window opening. If they differ by more than 1/4 inch, the window is out of square - let us know and we'll adjust.
Outside Mount
Outside mount blinds are installed on the wall or trim above and around the window. This option is ideal for windows with shallow frames or when you want to make windows appear larger.
- Measure the width - Measure the total width you want the blinds to cover. We recommend adding at least 1.5 inches on each side of the window opening for proper light blockage.
- Measure the height - Measure from the top of where you want the blinds mounted to the bottom of where you want them to reach. Add 2-3 inches above the window frame.
- Measure from the outermost trim - If your window has decorative trim, measure from the outermost edge on each side.
Pro Tips
- Always use a steel tape measure - cloth tapes can stretch and give inaccurate readings.
- Measure each window individually, even if they look the same. Windows are rarely identical.
- Record measurements in inches to the nearest 1/8 inch.
